[...] It is still very much a closed-circuit affair: It is Vodafone and no one else. It is proprietary, tailor-made and not open. This is not good (and, yes, I know that the oft-cited iPhone is proprietary and tailor-made, too). Alas, its applications are not – unless your name is Spotify; then it takes a little longer… [...]

I think we will be seeing a bit of a re-think. I saw e.g. that the WSJ is intending to charge for access "on the go" (http://bit.ly/f4XaY). Similar principle: high value to its users, more value when always accessible. Nothing like e-mail from BB but the whales might be a thing of the past anyhow. Thoughts?

Right. "Content" definetly has value and people will pay. But it's not clear why its significanly more likely they will pay when mobile is involved.

I just about grasp it with Spotify (being able to take a playlist with you does have added value). Any other examples?

It used to apply with mobile email (Blackberry), but now anyone can get, say Mail4Exchange, or gmail, or whatever, for free.

Hi Gabriel, thanks for your comment. This is NOT about faith in apps, it is about faith in finding working business model for valuable content. It worked (to some small extent) with music online (iTunes), it works for some with a largely ad-funded model (e.g. Zynga games on Facebook), it works with app subscriptions (World of Warcraft). Now, I appreciate these are few (!) highlights but I believe it is about the value to the user: if, where and when something adds value to a user, the perceived price is lower. What I am trying to plead here is that, because of the many competing offers on the web, this may not actually work online. However, anytime access to a catalogue of 6m+ songs on the go might present value enough to compel users in taking out the subscription: it basically turns your phone into a 1 TB iPod, and competition as well as ability to substitute there is smaller.

It certainly is not easy but, equally, the answer is cannot be that there isn't one. If there was no business model for compelling content, there would not be compelling content. We have to continue trying ;-)

Good article. It's an article of faith that you can monetize apps on mobile that you can't on the wired Internet. This stems (it seems to me) from people paying for ring tones, and premium SMS, etc. I'm not sure it will be as easy as that.
